Rights
The Bill of Rights, the great invention of our forefathers, is in jeopardy; our rights are gradually disappearing. “Let me count the ways.”
Formally, having a driver’s license was a right – now it is a privilege, granted by the state in which you reside. You must, by law, wear a seat belt when riding in a vehicle. All motorcyclists and bike riders are obligated to wear helmets. People in cars can’t smoke when there is an infant in the vehicle. In many states it is illegal to use a cell phone handset when driving. Soon, your only choice of light bulbs will be fluorescent. There is a movement afoot to restrict unhealthy restaurant fare. Scientists may not use federal funds for stem cell research. Women may not have abortions in facilities that are funded by the government. You can’t pray in schools. Yet, you can deface the American flag. Next, will the government ban sexual intercourse for people over 65 in order to prevent heart attacks?
All of these restrictions are imposed by politicians, who know what’s best for us. It’s true that wearing seat belts reduce the extent of injuries in vehicular collisions and the use of helmets mitigates serious injuries for bikers and motorcyclists. This is a Republic, where we have inalienable rights, even to do something foolish and illogical. The danger we face is complete governmental control and the loss of our democracy, if this pattern continues.
